Job Title:                      Finance Manager

Accountable to:           Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

 Location:                     Ipswich Office/Hybrid

 Hours:                         14 Hours per week

 Contract:                     Permanent

 Salary:                         £37,000 pro rata per annum, plus pension

 Key Responsibilities:

 1. Financial Planning & Strategy

  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting and long-term financial planning in collaboration with the CEO and senior leadership.

  • Provide financial analysis and modelling to support strategic decisions (e.g., service expansion, funding changes, cost pressures).

2. Financial Operations & Reporting

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations: bookkeeping, accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, cash-flow management.

  • Prepare monthly/quarterly management accounts and present clear financial reports to senior leadership and Board/Trustees.

  • Ensure preparation of year-end statutory accounts, liaising with external auditors.

  • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds (grants, donations, contracts) and ensure correct accounting and reporting for each.

  • Manage/oversee payroll, pensions, VAT, Gift Aid, tax returns and ensure all statutory obligations are met.

3. Governance, Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure financial systems, policies and procedures are fit for purpose and reflect best practice in the charity sector.

  • Maintain a robust internal control environment and ensure compliance with relevant legislation (Charities Act, Charity SORP, Companies Act, HMRC, etc.).

  • Support the Board by providing timely, accurate information and ensuring good financial governance.

  • Identify financial risks (e.g., funding volatility, cost inflation) and propose mitigations.

4. Funding, Cost Control & Efficiency

  • Work with the fundraising team to provide financial input into bids, proposals and funding monitoring.

  • Monitor cost centres to control expenditure and maximise value for money.

  • Review and improve financial processes and systems to improve efficiency, accuracy and insight.

5. Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Manage and develop the finance officer, fostering a positive, collaborative, mission-driven culture.

  • Act as a partner to non-finance colleagues: promoting financial awareness, describing financial implications in plain language, providing training/support where needed.

  • Work closely with service leads to ensure frontline services (support for survivors) are resourced effectively and financially sustainable.

 

 Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified accountant or equivalent professional qualification/experience.

  • Proven experience in a finance management role, ideally within a charity, social enterprise or non-profit environment.

  • Good working knowledge of charity accounting principles (Charity SORP), restricted fund accounting.

  • Strong skills in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and presenting to non-finance stakeholders.

Desirable Experience & Skills

  • Experience in the domestic abuse / women’s sector or working with vulnerable populations.

  • Familiarity with multiple income streams (grants, services/contracts, donations) and cost/control in a service-delivery setting.

  • Experience of managing or developing a small finance team.

  • Proficiency in finance/accounting software (e.g., Xero, Sage) and advanced Excel skills.

  • Strong communicator able to explain financial issues in straightforward terms, build relationships across the organisation, influence and support decision-making.
